Free Gas Central Heating Grants
Central heating grants, whether for first-timers or otherwise, are part of government intervention plans to assist low-income households to afford standard heating systems. Funded by utility companies, these funds are directly under the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme.
However, the process of accessing central heating grants can be cumbersome. That is why we take it upon ourselves at Energihaven to help householders like you get the best outcome from applying.
But before we highlight our process, let’s clear a few misunderstandings about the commonly used terms in heating grants.
Understanding The Different Forms Of Heating Grants
First Time Central Heating (FTCH) Grants
FTCH grants are streamlined for homeowners and private tenants with no history of central heating. Like the name, the grants will help the households navigate the cost of installing heating systems for the first time.
While the grants often cover the entire installation cost, this is not always the case. Either way, if successful, your household would receive a significant, no-repayment fund towards alleviating fuel poverty.
Free Central Heating Grants
This term is only extra for emphasis. Ordinarily, grants require no repayment; they are free. Besides, in the case of central heating grants, the sponsors are clearly stated.
Central heating grants are part of the ECO scheme – a government intervention sponsored by utility companies. You can think of the funds as a form of corporate social responsibility.
Free Gas Central heating Grants
If your home doesn’t already use a heating system powered by gas, you can access a first-time gas heating grant. The processes and requirements are similar to FTCH. The only difference is the power source.
Regardless of the term you know, we can improve your chances of securing a central heating grant. Here is how we will help:

Checking Your Eligibility Status
Before we can help you, you must be eligible for receiving the heating grants. And we don’t require any “extra” eligibility tests. You only need to meet the government-required standards as follows:
• First, you must either be a low-income homeowner or a private renter (with your landlord’s permission).
• More importantly, you must already enjoy at least of these benefits:
◦ Armed Forces Independence Payment
◦ Attendance Allowance
◦ Carer’s Allowance
◦ Child Benefit
◦ Child Tax Credits
◦ Constant Attendance Allowance
◦ Disability Living Allowance
◦ Employment and support allowance (income-related)
◦ Income Support
◦ Industrial injuries disablement benefit
◦ Jobseeker’s allowance (Income-based)
◦ Mobility supplement
◦ Pension Credit (guarantee)
◦ Personal independence payment
◦ Severe disablement allowance
◦ Universal credit
◦ War Pension Mobility Supplement
◦ Working tax credit
Note: child benefit requires “extra” rules on income before it can automatically qualify you for central heating grants.
• Furthermore, Housing Association homes require an EPC rating of E, F, or G to qualify for heating grants.
• Unlike Housing Association homes, rented residences must meet an EPC rating of A, B, C, D, or E.
Central heating grants are available for you if your home is currently heated by any of the following systems: electric room heaters, fan heaters, inefficient electric storage heaters, LPG room heaters, oil room heaters, fossil fuel room heaters, etc.
In addition, The installer may also check other eligibility like Loft insulation, underfloor insulation, roof insulation, cavity wall insulation and solid wall insulation (External and Internal).

Central Heating Grants FAQs Answered
Can I Get A Grant For A Central Heating System?
Yes! You can get a brand new centrally heated system for free. However, you must meet the requirements of the ECO scheme to improve your chances. First, you must either be a homeowner or a private tenant. Most importantly, being a beneficiary of other benefits will qualify you as a low-income household.
Who Is Entitled To Free Gas Central Heating?
Anyone who passes the eligibility test of heating grants is entitled to a free gas central heating grant. Retirees, pensioners and older applicants can also be eligible. However, your location also matters. For example, the government-schemed ECO only covers England, Scotland, and Wales.
Who Qualifies For First Time Central Heating Grants?
Anyone who hasn’t installed a central heating system qualifies for FTCH grants. The process could even be faster if you have access to the qualifying benefits.
However, note that the FTCH grants sometimes don’t cover all the costs of central heating systems. Nonetheless, rest assured that you’ll receive a considerable sum to ease the cost.
Can You Still Access FTCH Grant When You Didn’t Claim The Qualifying Benefits?
Yes! We helped many homeowners access FTCH grants, even when they didn’t claim qualifying benefits such as working tax or universal credit. The truth is that none of that (the qualifying benefits) matters as long as your household income per annum is less than £25,000.
Note: even when you earn less than £25,000 annually, your property (rented) must still meet an EPC rating of E, F, or G.
Is There A Limit For FTCH Grant?
In our experience, there is no limit on heating grants. Instead, homeowners and private tenants only get a fund that matches the cost of installing a central heating system in their homes. And because the types and sizes of properties vary, the approved grants also vary.
Nonetheless, you can expect a range of £2,300 to £5,500; that is the average cost of installing a central heating system across the UK.
How Much time does it take for central heating to be installed in my home?
Central heating installation generally takes one or two days, but this may vary depending on the size and complexity of your home. The first day is generally spent on the installation of the boiler and the radiators, while the second day is generally spent on the installation of the plumbing and the wiring.
If your home already has a gas line, the installation will be much simpler and take less time. If your home does not have a gas line, the installation will take longer, as a gas line will need to be installed.
What If You Are Not Eligible For Central Heating Grants?
Not everyone will be eligible for the government’s ECO-funded grants. Even so, other bodies may be able to assist. For example, you could try the Green Deal Finance scheme.
Unlike the ECO scheme, Green Deal Finance is a loan; it uses the savings on your heating bills to offset your loan repayments. That way, you won’t feel the extra pressure of debt.
If you don’t like Green Deal Finance, we can offer you personalized help. With us at Energihaven, you can get a new boiler at a discounted price. And we don’t have any rigid requirements. All you need to do is contact us. Do that, and get a discounted quote within a day.
If you’re ready, you can even get started with the discounted quote now!
